Post Treatment / Home Care

Following your root canal, you will have soreness for a day or two. This is normal. You may take over-the-counter pain medications to relieve discomfort. Soaking the area with a warm salt-water mixture (8 oz. of water & ½ teaspoon of salt) may also be helpful.

The tooth opening through which the root canal was performed has been sealed with a temporary filling. Please plan to see your family dentist within the next few weeks for a permanent restoration.

Typically, the treated tooth has been weakened due to decay and fillings. Therefore, it is often necessary that the tooth receive a cap or onlay for additional protection. Your dentist will determine the best restoration for your case.

We will need to see you again in six months for a re-examination. There is no additional charge for this visit.

After your Root Canal Treatment

  1. After leaving the office, we recommend you go directly home. Apply an ice pack to the treated area for the rest of the day; 10 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
  2. Do not lift your lip to examine the stitches. This may cause the tissues to tear.
  3. Brush your teeth as normal, but be very careful when brushing near the treated area.
  4. The day after your surgery, rinse your mouth with a warm salt-water solution. Try to rinse for 5 minutes every hour.
  5. Although soreness is a normal part of the healing process, fever is not. Please call us if you have fever.
